What is the COSC?
The Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) is an independent organisation founded in 1973.
It tests and certifies mechanical and quartz movements according to extremely rigorous standards.
Each movement is examined individually for 15 consecutive days in five positions and at three different temperatures (8°C, 23°C and 38°C).
To obtain the title of certified chronometer, a mechanical movement must have an average accuracy of between -4 and +6 seconds per day, according to ISO standard 3159.
The stages of certification
1 - Movement manufacture
Designed and assembled in Switzerland, each Norton Peak calibre is crafted with micrometric precision and artisanal care.
2 - Submission to the COSC laboratory
The movements, still unencased, are sent to the COSC laboratories to undergo a series of independent analyses.
3 - Tests under real conditions
The movement is evaluated in several positions and under different temperatures, reproducing the conditions of use on the wrist.
4 - Performance analysis
The rate deviation, daily variation and rate stability are measured with absolute precision.
5 - Awarding of the official certificate
Only movements that meet the specified tolerances are awarded the Swiss Official Chronometer Certificate, proof of internationally recognised excellence.
